Student Observer to Regental Committees (2026-2027)

As the official voice of UC students, UCSA and UCGPC jointly nominate students to sit on selected Regental Committees as Student Observers. These representatives are invited to the dais during UC Regents meetings to give a 5-minute remark on an agenda item of their choice to their respective committees. In addition, they are granted “backstage” access to the Regents, which provides critical opportunities to advocate for their issues of priority and build relationships with key decision makers.

About Student Observers

Student Observers serve one-year terms and are expected to attend every full Board of Regents meeting, for which the cost of travel, lodging, and food will be covered by the UC Office of the President. Applicants being considered for these positions will first be nominated by UCSA to the appropriate Regental Committee Chair, who will then make the final decision of whom to appoint.

There will be one Student Observer per committee for up to four committees. The Student Observer have the opportunity to be seated at the presenter’s table for the duration of the Committee’s consideration of the item and to address the Committee members on the agenda item(s) at the time of the Committee Chair’s choosing. The Student Observer has up to five minutes to address the Committee.

Once all applications are received, UCGPC and UCSA jointly nominate at least three students in good standing to the Secretary and Chief of Staff for each Standing Committee selected. Each Committee Chair then appoints the Student Observer to that committee. Each student appointed shall serve the committee for the academic year; no substitution of Student Observers shall be permitted. If a vacancy occurs, UCSA and UCGPC may solicit applications for a new Student Observer using the above mentioned process.

Requirements: Candidates must currently be a graduate or professional student at one of the University’s ten campuses. At the time of application, the candidate must be in good academic and disciplinary standing and remain in good standing throughout their appointment as a representative. UCOP will confirm students’ status with their respective campuses before the appointment. Applicants should be able to attend all meetings.
